Annual Lasagna Dinner & Silent Auction
The entire community is invited to attend the "Annual Lasagna Dinner & Silent Auction" to be held on Friday, October 18 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm in the Fireside Room of Hamline Church, 1514 Englewood Avenue. Tickets for seniors (ages 65 and older) and children (ages 10 & under) are only $5, while tickets for everyone else are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. So please bring the family for a wonderful meal with meat and vegetarian lasagna options (prepared by chef Erik Hendrickson), purchase one or more interesting items from the silent auction, and listen to enchanting music from the duo WindSongs. All proceeds benefit Hamline Midway Elders.
Second Tuesday Luncheons
Lunch is at 11:30; speaker at 12:15-1:00. A free blood pressure clinic and nurse consultation begins at 11:15. New guests especially welcome! Location: Hamline Methodist Church, 1514 Englewood Ave, St. Paul. Free parking. Free transportation for seniors from the Hamline Midway neighborhood. $4.00 suggested free-will donation for the meal. October 8: "Safety for Seniors" Commander Matt Toupal and Crime Prevention Coordinator Pam McCreary from the St. Paul Police Department will discuss personal safety, home safety, and scams targeted at seniors.
November 12: "AARP, Social Security & Medicare" A representative from AARP Minnesota will provide an overview of their organization and discuss issues impacting Social Security and Medicare.
December 10: "Holiday Music" Ross Hackenmiller, Artist in Residence at Hamline Church, will play guitar and lead luncheon attendees in a wide variety of holiday music.
Free Exercise Class
A new session of Joint-Friendly exercise classes will begin September 17 and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, 1:30-2:30 pm for eight weeks. Sessions are offered at no cost and will be held at 1514 Englewood Ave, St. Paul (Hamline Midway Church). Call (651) 209-6542 to register, or for more information. Drops-in’s at any time are welcome.
Caregiver Support Group
A free support group for caregivers meets the second Thursday of each month from 6:30–8:00 pm at Hamline Methodist Church, 1514 Englewood Ave, St. Paul. This group is designed for caregivers to find support, and to exchange information, and will be facilitated by Hamline Midway Elders staff and trained volunteers. It is open to anyone caring for older adults or persons of any age with special needs. Refreshments are provided. Call (651) 209-6542 to register, or for more information.
CoNNect Networking Group for Persons 50+
CoNNect, “Caring for our Neighbors and Neighborhood,” is a networking group for persons 50+ that meets 10:30-12:00, every 3rd Thursday of the month at Groundswell Coffee.
CoNNect’s goals are to:
- Share information about what’s happening in the Hamline Midway community.
- Provide updates about volunteer and work projects.
- Provide support to group members by offering suggestions and assistance with various issues facing seniors.
Discount Book for Local Businesses
A new discount book with great deals from participating local businesses is available from Hamline Midway Elders. Discounts may be used multiple times and are good through May 31, 2014. The cost for the coupon book is $15.00 and all proceeds benefit Hamline Midway Elders. Purchasing a coupon book is a good way to support both Hamline Midway Elders and local community businesses.
